Vagabond Café, 12/28/2012

These last few weeks of being a ticket-selling machine have been weird for me — few things feel further from what I like doing with my music than hounding people for money (I know it’s going to be worth it, I’m just saying) — so it was nice last night to be able to just get back to doing the fun part. I hadn’t been able to expend a lot of effort promoting last night’s gig, so I showed up with low expectations, but what I was treated to was the presence of Nathan Zoob and both members of Broken Fences, Guy and Morgan!

Zoob went to college with Guy and Morgan, and met me at Caffe Vivaldi shortly after I had moved to NYC. He was playing there with a band formed out of CMU, and had a very positive attitude that lit me up through my set that day, and last night. Guy and Morgan, well, we’ve talked a lot about them already, but it was a real pleasure to give them a few minutes of stage time, so I could pitch them to Mike, the owner of the Vagabond. We made a plan to do a joint night there on Feb 15, which will be preceded by a week of open mics to promote it. Mark your calendars!

The set, to the best of my recollection:

The Game Of Us
Wonderful Lie
Peter For Paul
Trouble
Right On
Tossing and Turning
Wild World (Cat Stevens cover)
….then, I think Guy and Morgan did “Reach” and “Wait”
Ralph (at Guy and Morgan’s request)
Not Giving Up

I played less songs than usual but got some decent storytelling/rambling time in, and everyone seemed happy at the end of the night. After-gig drinks turned into a singalong of “High and Dry” at the 59th St/Columbus Circle stop, and then we were joined by my friend Tim Lykins, who is always a pleasure to run into and hang out with as well.

All in all, last night felt triumphant — wine, song, and friendship whirled together and simmered into a pleasant boullabaisse that I’d like to have more often.
